Cheryl’s story
Brady Beginnings
Cheryl joined Brady Solicitors in 2017 as a Solicitor in the Service Charge team. Previously Cheryl had been a Partner at Shakespeare Martineau in the specialist banking litigation team.
Upon joining Bradys Cheryl’s core responsibility was utilising her considerable litigation experience in dealing with a varied leasehold litigation caseload. Despite being new to the challenges of leasehold litigation her approachable and supportive solutions-based advice quickly created strong and trusted relationships with key clients that still exist.
Cheryl is now a key member of the Debt and Dispute Resolution Team where she deals with complex leasehold service charge disputes for Managing Agent clients.
What does your role look like now?
In order to deliver a more successful client experience I was part of the launch of the DDR Team. This means all complex cases are dealt with by a specialist team.
As a litigator my day is all about deadlines, driving cases forwards and ensuring clients are kept up to date. Clients vary from experienced agents who are familiar with the litigation process, to RMC directors have never been involved in litigation before and require detailed explanations of every aspect of the litigation we undertake to aid their understanding before instructions can be confidently given.
Bradys has a hybrid flexible approach to time in the office and as I live some distance from the office (50 miles!) this has been invaluable. However, is vital to maintain contact with colleagues and I really enjoy my office days and the chance to catch up with the team and share experience, knowledge and updates about what is going on in our worlds outside Bradys.
Brady Backing
We have to keep up to date with changing AML, CPR rules and case law specific to property litigation and to this end I regularly attend courses, generally online although sometimes office based. We work a variety of office schedules in the DDR team with team members spread across the Midlands. It is therefore important that we always catch up weekly as a team and I know that whilst I may not always be sat next to them, I have expert colleagues to pick the brains of just a Teams calls away.
I really enjoy sharing my knowledge and practical experience with the Bradys trainee solicitors who get a thorough grounding in CPR rules and client management when they are with us in the DDR team. I have been a litigation solicitor for over 20 years and it is still hard on occasions to predict a hearing outcome due to the variables of the cases we run in both the First Tier Tribunal and the county court, but litigators like a challenge and by trying to anticipate all scenarios we put ourselves in the best place to be successful at hearing or to reach settlement outside of court if that is the best outcome for the client.
What would you say it’s like working at Bradys?
Before joining Bradys, I worked at City Law firms and a large regional commercial firm in a number of sectors, which has given me a rounded view of the profession. I would say the common thread in every firm, regardless of size, location or practice area, is to develop strong relationships with clients, understand the industry specific dynamics and create processes fusing that knowledge with our legal know how to create the best outcomes.
As a specialist property practice, Bradys is very fast moving and you quickly need to ensure that your organization and time management skills are where they need to be. I like the variety of my caseload and really enjoy discussing tactics and strategy with the teams and sharing the wins with clients and colleagues. I also find a lot of satisfaction knowing this is a challenging job, but I am part of a firm that supports me and champions success.
There is a real staff connection at Bradys, that you don’t always find in larger firms and new starters are recruited to match the existing teams and the firm’s brand values. Bradys is on a real growth journey at the moment and it is reassuring to know our Senior Management Team are working to ensure that we recruit and retain the right people to fit the firm’s ethos and give our client’s the best possible experience when working with us.
